Catcalls of NYC

USA and Worldwide

Catcalls of NYC is a grassroots initiative that uses public chalk art to raise awareness about gender-based street harassment. We solicit stories of harassment and their locations in NYC. Then, we write out the comments in chalk word-for-word alongside the hashtag #stopstreetharassment and post the images on Instagram. The goal is to spur dialogue, provide a space for story sharing, and ultimately promote cultural change. Since Catcalls of NYC started in March 2016, it has inspired over 150 young activists around the world to start "Catcalls of" sites in their cities. Now, we make up Chalk Back, a global youth-led movement against gender-based harassment.

Fair space NL

The Netherlands

Fairspace’ s vision is for a society in which everyone in the Netherlands, regardless of sex, race, gender or gender expression, feels safe moving through public spaces. Whether through transforming experiences on our streets, in bars and nightclubs, in schools or in the workplace, we tailor our services to the needs of our partners. Our work focuses on three impact areas: Education, Co-creation and Policy advice.

CASS

USA

Collective Action for Safe Spaces is a grassroots organisation that uses comprehensive, community-based solutions through an intersectional lens to eliminate public gendered harassment and assault in the DC metropolitan area. We work to honour and support survivors of public gendered harassment while also challenging current institutional frameworks that diminish their voices and/or experiences, especially the voices and/or experiences of people who are marginalised by layers of structural oppression. We believe in the power of community-driven, action-oriented solutions to spark the individual, community, and societal culture changes that will create a world free of public gendered harassment.

Next Stop

Italy

Next Stop is a non-profit organization created to raise public awareness on a topic that has long been a taboo. No one talks about it therefore the problem doesn’t exist: we know, because we have often been harassed on public transport.  We identified roughly a dozen types of molesters, collected through experiences on the media and for each type we describe Where to find them, How to recognize them, a psychological profile, the Paranoia that prevents you from speaking up against the molester and, finally, the Reactions that bystanders can have to make sure that those who travel on the media feel safer and less isolated. These descriptions, like our tone, are ironic but direct: not to treat the subject superficially, but with lightness: the aim is to exorcise these types of molesters so that victims of harassment don’t feel ashamed but those who harass, instead, do.

HOLLABACK!

Worldwide

Hollaback! is on a mission to end harassment — in all its forms. We work together to understand the problem, ignite public conversations, and develop innovative strategies that result in safe and welcoming environments for all. We believe that we all deserve to be who we are, wherever we are.

Women in Urbanism

New Zealand

We do this by amplifying the voices and actions of all self-identifying wāhine, girls and non-binary people. Part of our work includes calling out the epidemic of street harassment, while advocating for built environment solutions that enable women to feel safe and comfortable in public spaces."
